This year, my husband and I decided to do something simple.
We sat down and picked 12 dates—one for each month.
No big meaning attached. No relationship reset. We just thought it would be fun to actually plan time together instead of always saying, “We should do that sometime.”
Life fills up fast. Work, routines, responsibilities, if it’s not on the calendar, it usually doesn’t happen. This was our way of making sure time together doesn’t get pushed to the bottom of the list.
The 12 Dates We Chose
Here’s what we landed on (and honestly, just making the list was half the enjoyment):
1. Bingo
2. Double date with friends to go bourbon tasting
3. Murder Mystery at the Kentucky Castle
4. Derby Dinner Playhouse or Another play
5. Weekend trip
6. Fancy dinner
7. Couples massage and dinner or a spa trip
8. Go to a basketball or football game
9. Visit a festival
10. Day trip
11. Dinner at an Indian restaurant and a movie
12. Go to a Derby Week race or event
Some of these are bigger plans. Some are easy nights. They’re just things we know we’ll enjoy, and now they won’t get forgotten.
Why This Actually Works (Or at least why we hope it works.)
There are no rules attached to this. No pressure to do one every single month or make each date some big production.
It’s just a list we can pull from when weeks start blending together and everything feels like work and errands.
And this doesn’t have to start in January. It works just as well if you start in March, July, or whenever you realize time is flying and you’d like to slow it down a bit.
12 More Date Ideas to Steal
If you want to make your own list, here are some ideas you can mix and match:
1. Cook a themed dinner at home
2. Take a drive with coffee and no real destination
3. Go thrifting and pick outfits for each other
4. Check out a local class or workshop
5. Sunrise or sunset picnic
6. Visit a museum or historic spot
7. Game night at home
8. Take a class together (cooking, dance, pottery)
9. Outdoor movie night
10. Coffee shop hopping
11. Recreate an early-date or nostalgia night
12. Bookstore date with a small budget and coffee after
Not every date has to be exciting or expensive. The point is just doing something on purpose instead of defaulting to the couch every time.
If You’re Thinking About It
If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, sit down together and make your own list. Keep it realistic. Keep it flexible. Make it yours.
Sometimes a little planning goes a long way.
